When You Go
Getting There: Flying into Billings, MT enables you to drive the renown Beartooth Highway (Rte 212) through stunning alpine meadows at elevations nearing 11,000 feet into Cooke City, just outside Yellowstone's northeastern gate.

Where to Stay: Cooke City offers a variety of accommodations ranging in price from around $60/night an up, as well as an assortment of restaurants and other tourist services.  For information on accommodations in the park, call 307-344-7381, or go to www.nps.gov/yell.

Where to Eat: Try the Pine Tree Café for breakfast in Cooke City and the Cooke City Café for dinner. Choices in the park are limited to concessionaire restaurants and stores. Dinner reservations are required in the restaurants at the Mammoth Springs Hotel and Old Faithful Inn.

Don't Miss:: Early morning wildlife watching over the Lamar Valley. Appetizers in the bar at the Mammoth restaurant. An after-dark stroll to Observation Point above Old Faithful.

Tips: Traveling any distance off of the road requires proper equipment and behavior. The Park Service publishes their rules and common sense recommendations for backcountry travel in Yellowstone Today, the park's official newspaper. The paper also carries a park map and information on safety, travel logistics, campgrounds, fishing, wildlife, hiking, and the park's major attractions.

What to Bring: Follow the Park Service's list of recommended gear. Be sure to bring a light pair of binoculars and a camera with telephoto capabilities. Pack it all in a sturdy, comfortable daypack. Solid, comfortable footgear is also essential.
